The Importance of Sketching
Earlier in the Spring we met up with family near the river Usk on the England Wales boarder. The weather was spectacular with barely a cloud passing the sun and each morning I was up at 04.30 and heading out for the sun-rise and dawn chorus. I just took a simple kitbag of sketch-book, two or three pencils, erasor, binoculars and camera.
I particularly wanted to get a painting of the sun rising over the River Usk and had done my research by looking at maps to try to spot good points for capturing the sunrise.
The joy of the sunrise isn't just the light but also magic of the long cast shadows as the sun creeps over the horizon. My first sketch captured the bluebells on a hillside and the mists rising over the riverside meadows and hills.
